This may be one of the most underrated of all Japanese trains. The limited express train operates 15 roundtrips daily between Okayama and Izumoshi making it incredibly convenient. In addition to the typical Green and Ordinary seats, it stands out by offering a compartment seat that lies completely flat. While there are only four total, two for couples and two for groups, I was the only one using it. Ironically, the one I booked was out of order even though it looked fine.
I took the 7am departure so I definitely took the opportunity to lie down and catch some zzz. The thick padding was soft to rest on and long enough for an average person to stretch out. Even if one didn’t want to go horizontal, the space it provides allows one great flexibility to get really comfortable in any position. No wonder the train uses a cloud for its logo. My only complaint is the pole in the middle for the table but I guess it’s better to have it than not.
Ticket holders also have access to a lounge at Yonago station not that there was anyone there to check. It’s not particularly big but it’s cute with furniture shaped like the train’s logo as well as great views of the sculpture in front of the station.
