Sagano Romantic

The Sagano Romantic is a sightseeing train in Kyoto. It runs between stations Torokko Saga and Torokko Kameoka. The train itself isn’t anything special. Utilitarian with wooden bench seating. Its selling point lies in the scenery on the journey. While it’s not covered by the JR Pass, it won’t break the bank at 800 Yen.

The train departs from a dedicated, separate station next to Saga Arashiyama station. I found this out the hard way running late to the train, literally making it by scant seconds!

I am not a nature person so I really took the train because train, and not for the scenic journey. Not to say it was bad. The view of the Hozugawa River framed by the lush forest was pretty. I can see how beautiful it could be during fall foliage. I was more interested in the tanuki statues that passed by.

The ride took under 25 minutes. I think it stopped briefly at one station, otherwise flew by the others. The terminating station has a shop filled with related merchandise and food.
