Out of all the trains Kintetsu Railway runs, Shimakaze may be my favorite. I had reserved the private Japanese compartment and it was a delight to travel as if one was sitting at home. All it was missing was a blanket for kotatsu. There was a touch screen by the table with selections for the TV, radio, map, guide, and even a live feed of the operator’s view or train’s rear. Playing with the controls, I could change channels and the reception was acceptable if not stellar.
A hallmark of Kintetsu is onboard lockers and it was no exception here. The dining car is the highlight with two levels of seating. The oversized plush seats match the cozy space downstairs while the stools upstairs lend to a more bar feel. Thrown in an extensive menu, it was incredibly popular.
